If you’re in the market for diamond jewelry, whether an engagement ring or a tennis bracelet, you have probably seen items listed with either natural or lab-grown diamonds. But what’s the difference, and why do we like natural diamonds?

Natural vs. Lab-Grown Diamonds

Natural and lab-grown diamonds of similar clarity, weight, and cut will always appear nearly identical. A professional gemologist will need to look for particular clues to determine the difference. In composition, natural and lab-grown diamonds might only differ by the presence of nitrogen, which most natural diamonds possess.

Both are created by intense pressure placed on carbon, although how that process happens and its duration are significantly different. Naturally grown diamonds are found in the ground after billions of years of pressure, while artificial diamonds can be created in a matter of weeks or months.

The Diamond Industry Transformation

Unfortunately, many still remember the conflicts that erupted in the 1990s in rural areas of Africa, where diamonds are commonly found. Illegally mined diamonds were used to fund violent wars that significantly impacted local civilians. Because blood diamonds were indistinguishable from genuine diamonds, buyers were understandably concerned when purchasing them.

However, the diamond industry has changed dramatically since those dark days. Today, the responsible and sustainable mining of diamonds in these areas helps to support those communities with the gross revenue.

Protect and Support Remote Populations

The diamond mining in remote areas of Africa and other communities is now watched carefully by the Responsible Jewellery Council and other organizations. The Natural Diamond Council helps educate the world about the benefits of natural diamonds. Healthcare, education, jobs, grants for new businesses, and support for land management to protect endangered species and biodiversity have reshaped these rural regions and their populations.

Long-Term Investment

While supporting these communities, you are also investing. Natural diamonds have higher resale value if you sell or trade that diamond in the future. Lab-grown diamonds, at one time, had cost more than a comparable natural one but have declined in value over the years to only 10% of what they once were.

More Environmentally Friendly

The mining process is much more eco-friendly than how artificial diamonds are created. Some reports estimate that 37% less energy is needed, and three times less carbon is released into the environment for every diamond mined versus made.
